Some takeaways from the survey:

  • Average land holding size of Indian agricultural households in 1.1 hectares.
  • 37% of farmers held less than .4 hectares.
  • 30% hold between .41 to 1 hectare.
  • 13% holds greater than 2 hectares.
  • 5.2% agri households own a tractor.
  • 1.8% owns a power tiller.
  • Modern irrigation techniques like sprinkler and drip irrigation are used by just 1.85 and .8% respectively.
  • Nagaland(2.1 ha), Rajasthan(1.9 ha), and Haryana(1.7 ha) have the highest average land holding sizes.
  • Bihar, Sikikim, West Bengal, Tripura and Jammu & Kashmir have the least average land holding sizes.
  • Half of the rural households in the country are indebted.
  • Andhra pradesh (77%). Telangana(79%) and Karnataka(74%) tops the list with more than 70% farm households being indebted.
  • Average debt of an agricultural household is RS 1,04,603 and for non agricultural households is RS 76,731.
  • Agricultural households save more than non agricultural households.
